ADVISE: Symbolism and External Knowledge for Decoding Advertisements
In order to convey the most content in their limited space, advertisements
embed references to outside knowledge via symbolism. For example, a motorcycle
stands for adventure (a positive property the ad wants associated with the
product being sold), and a gun stands for danger (a negative property to
dissuade viewers from undesirable behaviors). We show how to use symbolic
references to better understand the meaning of an ad. We further show how
anchoring ad understanding in general-purpose object recognition and image
captioning improves results. We formulate the ad understanding task as matching
the ad image to human-generated statements that describe the action that the ad
prompts, and the rationale it provides for taking this action. Our proposed
method outperforms the state of the art on this task, and on an alternative
formulation of question-answering on ads. We show additional applications of
our learned representations for matching ads to slogans, and clustering ads

Impact of Scottish smoke-free legislation on smoking quit attempts and prevalence
<p><b>Objectives:</b> In Scotland, legislation was implemented in March 2006 prohibiting smoking in all wholly or partially enclosed public spaces. We investigated the impact on attempts to quit smoking and smoking prevalence.</p>
<p><b>Methods:</b> We performed time series models using Box-Jenkins autoregressive integrated moving averages (ARIMA) on monthly data on the gross ingredient cost of all nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) prescribed in Scotland in 2003–2009, and quarterly data on self-reported smoking prevalence between January 1999 and September 2010 from the Scottish Household Survey.</p>
<p><b>Results:</b> NRT prescription costs were significantly higher than expected over the three months prior to implementation of the legislation. Prescription costs peaked at £1.3 million in March 2006; £292,005.9 (95% CI £260,402.3, £323,609, p<0.001) higher than the monthly norm. Following implementation of the legislation, costs fell exponentially by around 26% per month (95% CI 17%, 35%, p<0.001). Twelve months following implementation, the costs were not significantly different to monthly norms. Smoking prevalence fell by 8.0% overall, from 31.3% in January 1999 to 23.7% in July–September 2010. In the quarter prior to implementation of the legislation, smoking prevalence fell by 1.7% (95% CI 2.4%, 1.0%, p<0.001) more than expected from the underlying trend.</p>
<p><b>Conclusions:</b> Quit attempts increased in the three months leading up to Scotland's smoke-free legislation, resulting in a fall in smoking prevalence. However, neither has been sustained suggesting the need for additional tobacco control measures and ongoing support.</p>
Seed systems smallholder farmers use
Seed can be an important entry point for promoting productivity, nutrition and resilience among smallholder farmers. While investments have primarily focused on strengthening the formal sector, this article documents the degree to which the informal sector remains the core for seed acquisition, especially in Africa. Conclusions drawn from a uniquely comprehensive data set, 9660 observations across six countries and covering 40 crops, show that farmers access 90.2 % of their seed from informal systems with 50.9 % of that deriving from local markets. Further, 55 % of seed is paid for by cash, indicating that smallholders are already making important investments in this arena. Targeted interventions are proposed for rendering formal and informal seed sector more smallholder-responsive and for scaling up positive impacts
Modes of Transmission of Influenza B Virus in Households
Introduction:While influenza A and B viruses can be transmitted via respiratory droplets, the importance of small droplet nuclei "aerosols'' in transmission is controversial.
Methods and Findings: In Hong Kong and Bangkok, in 2008-11, subjects were recruited from outpatient clinics if they had recent onset of acute respiratory illness and none of their household contacts were ill. Following a positive rapid influenza diagnostic test result, subjects were randomly allocated to one of three household-based interventions: hand hygiene, hand hygiene plus face masks, and a control group. Index cases plus their household contacts were followed for 7-10 days to identify secondary infections by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing of respiratory specimens. Index cases with RT-PCR-confirmed influenza B were included in the present analyses. We used a mathematical model to make inferences on the modes of transmission, facilitated by apparent differences in clinical presentation of secondary infections resulting from aerosol transmission. We estimated that approximately 37% and 26% of influenza B virus transmission was via the aerosol mode in households in Hong Kong and Bangkok, respectively. In the fitted model, influenza B virus infections were associated with a 56%-72% risk of fever plus cough if infected via aerosol route, and a 23%-31% risk of fever plus cough if infected via the other two modes of transmission.
Conclusions: Aerosol transmission may be an important mode of spread of influenza B virus. The point estimates of aerosol transmission were slightly lower for influenza B virus compared to previously published estimates for influenza A virus in both Hong Kong and Bangkok. Caution should be taken in interpreting these findings because of the multiple assumptions inherent in the model, including that there is limited biological evidence to date supporting a difference in the clinical features of influenza B virus infection by different modes.published_or_final_versio
Haptic search with finger movements: using more fingers does not necessarily reduce search times
Two haptic serial search tasks were used to investigate how the separations between items, and the number of fingers used
to scan them, influence the search time and search strategy. In both tasks participants had to search for a target (cross)
between a fixed number of non-targets (circles). The items were placed in a straight line. The target’s position was varied
within blocks, and inter-item separation was varied between blocks. In the first experiment participants used their index
finger to scan the display. As expected, search time depended on target position as well as on item separation. For larger
separations participants’ movements were jerky, resembling ‘saccades’ and ‘fixations’, while for the shortest separation the
movements were smooth. When only considering time in contact with an item, search times were the same for all separation conditions.
Furthermore, participants never continued their movement after they encountered the target. These results suggest that participants
did not use the time during which they were moving between the items to process information about the items. The search times
were a little shorter than those in a static search experiment (Overvliet et al. in Percept Psychophys, 2007a), where multiple items were presented to the fingertips simultaneously. To investigate whether this is because the finger
was moving or because only one finger was stimulated, we conducted a second experiment in which we asked participants to put
three fingers in line and use them together to scan the items. Doing so increased the time in contact with the items for all
separations, so search times were presumably longer in the static search experiment because multiple fingers were involved.
This may be caused by the time that it takes to switch from one finger to the other
Comparative chromosome painting discloses homologous Segments in distantly related mammals
Comparative chromosome painting, termed ZOO-FISH, using DNA libraries from flow
sorted human chromosomes 1,16,17 and X, and mouse chromosome 11 discloses the
presence of syntenic groups in distantly related mammalian Orders ranging from
primates (Homo sapiens), rodents (Mus musculus), even-toed ungulates (Muntiacus
muntjak vaginalis and Muntiacus reevesi) and whales (Balaenoptera physalus). These
mammalian Orders have evolved separately for 55-80 million years (Myr). We conclude
that ZOO-FISH can be used to generate comparative chromosome maps of a large
number of mammalian species

Next-to-eikonal corrections to soft gluon radiation: a diagrammatic approach
We consider the problem of soft gluon resummation for gauge theory amplitudes
and cross sections, at next-to-eikonal order, using a Feynman diagram approach.
At the amplitude level, we prove exponentiation for the set of factorizable
contributions, and construct effective Feynman rules which can be used to
compute next-to-eikonal emissions directly in the logarithm of the amplitude,
finding agreement with earlier results obtained using path-integral methods.
For cross sections, we also consider sub-eikonal corrections to the phase space
for multiple soft-gluon emissions, which contribute to next-to-eikonal
logarithms. To clarify the discussion, we examine a class of log(1 - x) terms
in the Drell-Yan cross-section up to two loops. Our results are the first steps
towards a systematic generalization of threshold resummations to

The molecular characterisation of Escherichia coli K1 isolated from neonatal nasogastric feeding tubes
Background: The most common cause of Gram-negative bacterial neonatal meningitis is E. coli K1. It has a mortality rate of 10–15%, and neurological sequelae in 30– 50% of cases. Infections can be attributable to nosocomial sources, however the pre-colonisation of enteral feeding tubes has not been considered as a specific risk factor. Methods: Thirty E. coli strains, which had been isolated in an earlier study, from the residual lumen liquid and biofilms of neonatal nasogastric feeding tubes were genotyped using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and 7-loci multilocus sequence typing. Potential pathogenicity and biofilm associated traits were determined using specific PCR probes, genome analysis, and in vitro tissue culture assays. Results: The E. coli strains clustered into five pulsotypes, which were genotyped as sequence types (ST) 95, 73, 127, 394 and 2076 (Achman scheme). The extra-intestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) phylogenetic group B2 ST95 serotype O1:K1:NM strains had been isolated over a 2 week period from 11 neonates who were on different feeding regimes. The E. coli K1 ST95 strains encoded for various virulence traits associated with neonatal meningitis and extracellular matrix formation. These strains attached and invaded intestinal, and both human and rat brain cell lines, and persisted for 48 h in U937 macrophages. E. coli STs 73, 394 and 2076 also persisted in macrophages and invaded Caco-2 and human brain cells, but only ST394 invaded rat brain cells. E. coli ST127 was notable as it did not invade any cell lines. Conclusions: Routes by which E. coli K1 can be disseminated within a neonatal intensive care unit are uncertain, however the colonisation of neonatal enteral feeding tubes may be one reservoir source which could constitute a serious health risk to neonates following ingestion
Therapeutic DNA vaccine induces broad T cell responses in the gut and sustained protection from viral rebound and AIDS in SIV-infected rhesus macaques.
Immunotherapies that induce durable immune control of chronic HIV infection may eliminate the need for life-long dependence on drugs. We investigated a DNA vaccine formulated with a novel genetic adjuvant that stimulates immune responses in the blood and gut for the ability to improve therapy in rhesus macaques chronically infected with SIV. Using the SIV-macaque model for AIDS, we show that epidermal co-delivery of plasmids expressing SIV Gag, RT, Nef and Env, and the mucosal adjuvant, heat-labile E. coli enterotoxin (LT), during antiretroviral therapy (ART) induced a substantial 2-4-log fold reduction in mean virus burden in both the gut and blood when compared to unvaccinated controls and provided durable protection from viral rebound and disease progression after the drug was discontinued. This effect was associated with significant increases in IFN-γ T cell responses in both the blood and gut and SIV-specific CD8+ T cells with dual TNF-α and cytolytic effector functions in the blood. Importantly, a broader specificity in the T cell response seen in the gut, but not the blood, significantly correlated with a reduction in virus production in mucosal tissues and a lower virus burden in plasma. We conclude that immunizing with vaccines that induce immune responses in mucosal gut tissue could reduce residual viral reservoirs during drug therapy and improve long-term treatment of HIV infection in humans
